Much as I deplore the idea of retrospective taxation, the present British government has used it frequently over the past ten years, often for overtly political purposes. The Conservative Party should give notice now that when it forms a future government, it would levy a 99% tax on all of the profit of companies involved with this scheme, whether or not those profits came directly from their ID Card activities.

That should just about kill the project stone dead, and may even encourage me to vote Conservative again.
